Student Testimonials

University of Bath School of Management Student
Programme: The Bath MBA (full time)
Year of graduation: 2005
Nationality: British

Why did you choose the Bath MBA?
I wanted a programme that was more holistic and did not over-emphasise any particular academic aspect of business. I was very impressed with the lecturers and administrative staff on the open day and as I was born and grew up in Bristol, it was an opportunity to come back to the area.

How did you first hear about the University and the School of Management?
I did quite a bit of research and the Bath programme was mentioned in all the publications I read (Which, Economist, Financial Times) as a well-respected programme

Did you enjoy the programme, was it what you expected?
I didn't expect the intensity of the programme, which was there from start to finish. But it was an enjoyable, yet challenging environment in which to learn. I thought I'd get to use the great facilities more often than I actually did!

Was the experience rewarding; what did you learn?
I definitely learnt about myself and I will never again get the opportunity to be exposed to so many different people in one place. Being an accountant, I was more interested in the marketing and strategic aspects of the course and it has definitely put me in good stead for the future.

What is it like to study at Bath?
It's a great city to study, not too quiet, but not as many distractions as London, where I did my
undergraduate degree.

What are you doing now?
I spent three months at Channel 4 on a consultancy project and was then asked to return to my old company - Ingenious media - as a consultant in the Ventures division. They have just raised £150m on Aim to invest in progressive media companies.

Would you recommend the university to others?
Yes, definitely. The school and the programme are highly regarded and you will leave with a well-rounded MBA.

Programme: MSc in Advanced Management Practice
Employer: Mercedes-Benz

“I chose to study the MSc in Advanced Management Practice at Bath because it is packed full of interesting modules, a work placement that would give me the experience I needed to enter a graduate scheme, and ultimately, the chance to prove my potential in a top 5 business school.

For six breathtaking months I worked for L'Oreal at their head office in London as a Commercial Intern in the Luxury Products Division. Fast paced, dynamic and full of exceptionally capable people, I worked in a vibrant environment and was given considerable levels of responsibility from the start.

From project managing the delivery of country-wide incentive schemes for staff at Boots, to organising our presence at a range of conferences, my tasks were consistently wide-ranging and provided me with valuable personal and professional development.

After working as an Intern for L'Oreal, I followed a personal passion for automobiles and entered the graduate scheme at Mercedes-Benz. Over the next eighteen months, I will work in four different departments, developing a rounded picture of the business. I hope to secure a full time position in 2010.

The MSc in Advanced Management Practice has allowed me to really get to grips with my future and put in place a solid platform from which to enter my professional career. Providing an opportunity to stretch both my theoretical and practical knowledge of business, it has broadened my horizons as a graduate and brought me into contact with a unique bunch of people - both culturally and intellectually.

Perhaps most important of all, it has given me the foresight required to direct my energy into the pursuits that are most likely to allow me to achieve my aspirations and ambitions.”

Why did you choose the Bath MSc in Marketing?
Besides the overall reputation of the university with its excellent record of graduate employment, I chose the course because it is well designed for those who have already built a solid knowledge background in business studies and are aiming to specialise in marketing. The programme definitely covers the most discussed areas of marketing and offers up-to-date information on contemporary marketing practice.

How did you first hear about the University and the School of Management?
In The Sunday Times Good University Guide.

What have you enjoyed most about the programme so far?
The structure of the programme is really well thought out. There is balance between theory and practice among the different modules. Most of all, it is a pleasure to learn from all the academics who are leaders in various marketing fields, making first-hand information and guidance readily accessible to students.

What have you learnt so far?
We have covered many post-modern marketing issues which characterise the 21st century`s business world, for example: digital marketing, brand community and identity consumption. There are also invaluable transferable skills gained from working in teams of diverse backgrounds, such as planning and organising, time management, commercial awareness, communicative technique and research methods, all of which would be crucial in the course of my working life.

What is it like to study at Bath?
The school emphasises team-working. The 24-hour library is a big plus, providing a learning environment conducive to self study and group work. The Bath student is also expected to be a balanced individual, keeping ahead of studies and career development, but also allocating a sensible amount of time for extra-curricular activities. The vast variety of student societies and frequent career workshops is a strong testament to this. The work is demanding, but it's a pleasant and fulfilling experience where one can expect something new and challenging each single day. Last but not least, Bath is one of the most beautiful and picturesque cities in the country. What more can one ask for?

What would you like to do after you graduate?
I will be seeking graduate employment, looking forward to applying the knowledge learnt from my years of study, whilst learning the ropes of the real business environment. I would ideally like to work in brand/project management targeting the Asian market.

Would you recommend the programme to others?
Yes, absolutely, to those who hold a passion for marketing.
